Extending the Life of Your Printer
Proper maintenance of your printer is essential if you wish to reduce printing costs.
Paper jams or poor print quality will waste more time and money than you will save by refilling a printer cartridge.
Maintaining your printer is often overlooked but is just as important as maintaining an automobile. The last thing you need is having a printer fail just as you are trying print a crucial document, late at night, with no stores open to help you.
Printer manufacturers all have websites with trouble-shooting and maintenance guides. It is a good idea to print copies of their guides if you no longer have the original documentation that came with your printer.
Here are some basics that apply to all printers.
- Print heads can be gently wiped with a moist cloth.
- Vacuum dust and particles where there is easy access.
- A shot of compressed air can loosen bits of debris as well.
Most printers have a cleaning cycle. Run a “cleaning page” once or twice after routine maintenance.
Run a test page after cleaning before you start printing important documents.
Most manufacturers such as HP and Brother sell maintenance kits which are also handy and usually include more detailed instructions.
With proper maintenance your printer should provide years of worry free service.
